• Marked stops (shown in red) have a bus stop flag and pole.
• Unmarked stops (shown in white) do not currently have a flag or pole. These are generally little used or rural stops. If you would like to request installation of a bus stop pole at one of these locations, please contact us.
• Hail & Ride areas (shown in green) are usually found on roads where it has not been possible to find a suitable location for a marked bus stop. You can hail a bus (e.g. with a hand signal) and the driver will stop wherever it is safe to do so.

Boarding the bus

When the bus you want approaches your stop, always indicate clearly to the driver, by a hand signal, that you need it to stop for you. This applies to all bus stops in York, including those in the city centre.

Leaving the bus

If you wish to get off at the next stop, press the nearest 'Stop' button once to alert the driver. A bell or buzzer will sound and the 'Bus Stopping' sign at the front of the bus will illuminate to advise other passengers. Press the button well in advance so the driver has enough time to stop the bus safely.

Bus shelter dismantling and replacement

Following confirmation of a change of bus shelter supplier, from JCDecaux UK Ltd to Bauer Media Outdoor, City of York Council have been working closely with JCDecaux UK replace bus shelters, whilst minimising disruption to residents and the transport network.

Last year, JC Decaux UK trialled the dismantle and removal of six bus shelters across the city prior to the roll out of a full bus shelter change-over plan. From November 2025 work started to replace the remaining bus shelters across the city.

Why this is happening

The council’s 20-year contract with JCDecaux UK Ltd was coming to an end, so we needed to find a new provider through a competitive tender process, in line with government requirements. Following this process, Bauer Outdoor Media was selected to take over. In 2025, the council signed a new 15-year contract with Bauer Outdoor Media.

The new contractor is now in the process of introducing more up-to-date bus shelters in the city. These include new shelters, updated digital advertising panels, energy-saving lights (some solar powered), and more shelters with living roofs with plants to help support biodiversity and pollinators in York.

It is hoped that this contract will also bring in more money into the city, which can be used to invest in local services.

The new shelters will also offer discounted advertising for local small businesses and give us another way to share important news and information with residents.

What this means

Buses will continue to serve all stops as usual. However, over the coming months further bus shelters which were installed by JC Decaux will be removed and replaced by Bauer Outdoor Media.

Below we have listed the upcoming shelters that will be removed/replaced and will frequently update these pages as we work through the project.

How the process works

Firstly the physical shelter will be removed by JC Decaux. They are now undertaking more sensitive ground penetrating radar surveys on the remaining sites to provide more detailed information on the location of any utilities before any shelter is removed.

Then they need to also remove the existing foundations and arrange alterations to electrical connections. This is due to the duration of the previous concession contract, in some cases the foundations and the shelters have been in place for 20 years. This has meant that as well as removing the bus shelters JC Decaux are required to excavate the existing foundations and reinstate the tarmac or paved area in the footway. Following on from the removal works Bauer install their new foundations, bus shelter and with electrical connection where required.

After learning from the initial trial, we are working with both parties to ensure any bus shelter is replaced as quickly as possible. This will be dependent upon the weather, the uncovering of unexpected services and also the availability of permits to allow work in the roadways.

October 2026 Update

Currently, 72 of 126 shelters have been fully replaced.

The following list identifies locations that have been affected by unforeseen infrastructure issues, mainly electricity or communications cables, embedded in the JC Decaux foundations. These require the statutory services (Northern Power Grid/ BT) to divert the services. These must be done before existing foundations can be removed and then new shelters can be installed by Bauer Media. We are working with all partners to get these sites completed as soon as possible.

The work between JCDecaux and Bauer Media is separate to the ongoing improvements being made at council-owned bus stops across the city through the government funded Bus Service Improvement Plan.

We’ve made over 250 improvements across York. This includes providing real time information, better lighting, raised kerbs, new shelters and seating to improve accessibility, access and safety.

Council operated bus shelters

The council itself manages a range of bus shelters across the city and these shelters won’t be affected by this change.

Through our government funded Bus Service Improvement Plan we are making a number of improvements to council owned bus stops across the city. This includes providing real time information, better lighting, new shelters and seating.
