Accessible bus services

Find out about accessible bus services in York:

Low-floor and wheelchair-accessible buses

All local buses with a capacity of 22 or more passengers are required by law to be low-floor and wheelchair accessible.

The driver can lower the bus or extend the wheelchair ramp to make it easier for you to board.

Buses can normally accommodate 1 manual or electric wheelchair, however larger mobility scooters with handlebars cannot be carried.

For more detailed information on which types of scooter can be carried, please refer to the Confederation of Passenger Transport Code of Practice, which most bus operators are signed up to.

Some bus operators require mobility scooter users to carry out a basic manoeuvring test before being issuing a permit to use a scooter onboard their buses.

Accessible bus stops

The council has made significant progress in providing easy-access kerbs at bus stops in York city centre and along many high-frequency bus routes.

These allow the bus to get very close to the kerb edge, reducing the step distance to a minimum.
