A class 2 mobility scooter is a government-approved scooter designed for pavements, footpaths, and crossing roads. Also known as a ‘4mph pavement scooter’, it has a top speed of 4mph. It’s lightweight, compact, and easy to manoeuvre - ideal for indoor use and short journeys.
If you use a class 2 mobility scooter, you can take it on low-floor buses in York. To do this, you’ll need a 'Local Bus Scooter Permit', which you can apply for through Arriva or First Bus.
You only need 1 permit. When shown to the bus driver it allows you to travel on any bus journey within the City of York. Please note, the permit does not give you free or discounted travel.
Local mobility scooter bus permits from other parts of the UK are also accepted in York.
To find out why a permit is needed, you can read the national guidance here from the Confederation of Passenger Transport: Guide to mobility scooters on low-floor buses.
The following bus companies will ask to see your permit:
These operators do not require a permit:

You must bring a passport-sized photo to your assessment.
During a short assessment you’ll be shown how to safely board and exit a bus using your scooter. Even experienced users must complete this check.
After passing the assessment, you’ll receive a driving licence card sized permit displaying:
A folded class 2 mobility scooter will be treated as luggage and can be carried on board.
This might depend on space available and passengers with other carry-on items, but the driver will aim to ensure a scooter user can travel.
You don't need a permit to carry a scooter onto a bus as hand luggage.
