Find out how to charge your electric vehicle (EV) in York.

Charging at home

If you're planning to recharge at home and have off street parking, you should get a dedicated chargepoint installed. A dedicated chargepoint is safer and faster than a 3 pin socket. Most domestic chargepoints will provide 7 kW of power which will provide around 35 miles of charge in 1 hour making them ideal for overnight charging or topping up each day.

Charging your vehicle on the street is not allowed as EV charging cables trailing across the public highway are prohibited.

Public Charging points

There are lots of public chargepoints in the UK with more than 87,000 connectors already available and around 1,900 new devices being added every month.

Fast chargepoints will generally provide the same charging times as a home chargepoint. 50 kW Rapid chargers can provide around 150 miles of charge in 1 hour which means that a 0% to 80% charge will take around 30 to 60 minutes for most electric cars. 150 kW Ultra Rapid chargers can charge compatible vehicles three times faster than a Rapid charger.

The best way to find chargepoints is via Zap Map which shows the location, power output, and access methods for all public sites in the UK.

In York, the council provides a range of Fast and Rapid chargepoints through the York EV Network which are accessed via bp pulse (with Charge Your Car). Our current tariffs are displayed in the table below.

To see only these chargepoints on Zap Map, go to "Filters", then "Networks", then select "York City Council" from the list.

In 2023 we completed the decommissioning of our legacy chargepoints, added additional sites and saw the first full year of operation of two HyperHubs which are Ultra Rapid charging facilities, in line with our Public EV Charging Strategy. We have selected bp pulse as our new provider of chargepoints and are using the bp pulse network as our access partner.

We've answered some common questions below

Why are these chargers moving to a new operator?

These chargers are owned by City of York Council, we have taken the decision to move them to the bp pulse charging network to deliver a step change in both the quality and quantity of chargers, in line with the Public EV Charging Strategy.

How can I access the new bp pulse chargers?

You can:

  • use contactless payment on any Rapid 50kW or Ultra Rapid 150kW charger (contactless bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay)
  • use guest payment on the bp pulse website at all chargepoints
  • use bp pulse app at all chargepoints
  • sign up to the bp pulse network to receive an RFiD access card

How much will electricity cost?

We have selected bp pulse as our network provider, but we remain independent as the York EV Network. This means that our tariff structure is different to bp pulse. Whenever you use a City of York Council charger, the York tariff will apply, not any of the bp pulse tariffs.

Other fees

Rapid/Ultra Rapid - No parking fee (free). An overstay charge will apply. After 90 minutes an additional £10 charge will be applied. For every additional 60 minutes a further £10 fee will apply. The overstay fee is to encourage customers to use Rapid facilities appropriately. The initial time limit of 90 minutes allows all users to get a full charge from 0-100% battery state of charge.

Fast bays - Normal parking fee applies. Users can stay as long as they like as long as they pay for parking and are plugged into a charger. Users will continue to pay the normal network fee for charging.

Resident overnight charging offer - York residents can apply for a Minster Badge at the standard price. It allows residents with electric vehicles to park for free overnight whilst charging at Fast chargepoints in council-run car parks.

Should I become a bp pulse member?

Bp pulse members pay the same tariff as none members at all City of York Council chargepoints.

However if you regularly use bp pulse chargepoints in addition to the York EV Network, you may benefit from becoming a member. Bp pulse members can apply for an RFiD access card which is the most reliable method of accessing chargepoints. An RFiD card never has a dead battery, never needs a software update, and never suffers from poor mobile phone connection!
