Wheelchair Passenger Taxi Scheme

If you are a wheelchair user, there may be times when you are unable to use the wheelchair space on a bus.

If this happens in York, you can use the Wheelchair Passenger Taxi Scheme to get a free accessible taxi to your destination within the City of York Council area (see a map).

Find out about:

Please be aware, this is a trial scheme which applies only to wheelchairs, not mobility scooters, nor other mobility aids.

How to book a free taxi

The bus driver will print a ticket which fully explains what to do. You will not need to pay the bus fare.

There are simple steps to book your free taxi:

  1. Contact York Station Taxis; telephone: 01904 623332 within 30 minutes of the time printed on your ticket (the bus driver may be able to help).
  2. Say you want to use the Wheelchair Passenger Taxi Scheme.
  3. Tell them:
    • your name
    • your destination
    • the 6-digit ticket number
    • whether you need a wheelchair accessible taxi or not
    • how many passengers are travelling with you.
  4. They will tell you when the taxi is expected to arrive.
  5. When the taxi arrives, give the driver the first part of your ticket.

You will not need to pay the taxi driver, if your journey is within the City of York Council area (see a map).

If you book a taxi and then travel by bus instead, please contact York Station Taxis to cancel the booking. This makes the taxi available for somebody else.

Taxi to your destination

The Wheelchair Passenger Taxi Scheme can take you straight to your destination within the City of York Council area (see a map), not just a bus stop.

For example:

  • your home
  • the shops
  • a community centre
  • a friend's house
  • GP, pharmacy or hospital

If you would normally need more than one bus to complete your journey, the taxi can take you all the way to your destination.

People travelling with you

The Wheelchair Passenger Taxi Scheme provides 1 taxi for each wheelchair passenger who cannot get on a bus. A maximum of 2 wheelchair users travelling together can claim a free taxi each.

Other people can travel with you if there is enough room in the taxi.

If your group needs additional taxis for people travelling with you, they must be booked and paid for.

Help from your bus driver

Bus drivers have been trained to use the Wheelchair Passenger Taxi Scheme.

When the wheelchair space is unavailable on the bus you intended to travel on, they will:

If a driver does not know about the scheme, you can tell them that the ticket is available on their ticket machine, usually under the letter "W", or show them this webpage if you are able to.

Trial Wheelchair Passenger Taxi Scheme

The Wheelchair Passenger Taxi Scheme is a 12‑month trial, running from 9 October 2026.

York Station Taxis expects to have enough wheelchair-accessible taxis for most journeys. At busy times, you may have to wait longer.

If you think you waited too long, email: buses@york.gov.uk.

City of York Council will monitor all aspects of the scheme. They will review how the scheme is working, how often it’s used, how helpful it is and how much it costs.

If you have any questions or feedback relating to the Wheelchair Passenger Taxi Scheme, please email: buses@york.gov.uk.
