Bus shelter dismantling and replacement

New bus shelters will bring added benefits for bus travellers including improved seating, designated space for wheelchairs where possible, and green roofs on around 30 shelters.

Following confirmation of a change of bus shelter supplier, from JCDecaux UK Ltd to Bauer Outdoor Media (also known as Clear Channel UK), City of York Council are working closely with JCDecaux UK to test the process to dismantle shelters, whilst minimising disruption to residents and the transport network.

A decision was made to remove a small number of bus shelters in advance of the full changeover that is being planned to start later in the year. This was so all parties could understand the arrangements needed to remove bus shelters, with everything from highways permits, electrical connections and foundations being explored.

For the 6 shelters that have been removed, over the coming weeks JCDecaux is arranging for the existing foundations and electrical connections to be removed. After this has happened the new shelters will be installed by Bauer. We anticipate this will be completed by mid-October 2025.
