See details of organised group walks taking place during the 2022 York Walking Festival. All walks are free unless otherwise stated. You can also check out the free daily tours from AVG York.

The information will be updated up to the week itself, so please check this page before heading out. Some walks may need to change times and other details. New walks might also be added.


Saturday 17 September

City Walls Walk (10.00am)

A full circuit of York’s walls with stops for up to 7 walkers. The walk will cover many aspects of York’s history including Railways, Rowntree’s and Shakespeare. Please note there will be many steps up and down and that dogs and wheels are not allowed on the walls.

Walk organised by Friends of York Walls.

York Racecourse dog walk

A fun walk for dogs and their owners, with music, refreshments and stalls in aid of charity. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on leads.

  • Location: Meet at York Racecourse entrance, off Knavesmire Road
  • Times: Registration at 10.15am, Walk at 11.00am
  • Duration: 1 mile, 45 minutes

Crime and Punishment walk

A walk looking at the often gruesome history of crime and punishment in York.

Walk led by Mike Doss, local historian.

River Ouse Wander

A walk for people with a disability who are confident walkers but prefer the company of walking in a group. Volunteers will be available to guide people with a visual impairment (subject to numbers - please specify when you book). Bring a packed lunch, drinks and suitable footwear and clothing for the weather.

Visit the graves of military heroes and hear their stories.

Woodland wellbeing walk and activities

Join Families Get Active and the Rowntree Society for a Woodland Wellbeing Day at New Earswick Nature Reserve from 10.00am to 3.00pm.

Try some willow weaving, bushcraft, music, relaxation, fishing, mindful walking/forest bathing, nature detectives and photography.
