Pedestrianised city centre

The pedestrian zone footstreet hours are effective from 10.30am to 5pm, 7 days a week. This has been extended to 8pm to support the Covid 19 recovery (except during lockdown and stay at home stages). Cyclists must dismount in this area. See www.york.gov.uk/york-city-centre/footstreets for the latest updates.

The footstreets (see map above) include Blake Street, Castlegate, Church Street, Colliergate, Coney Street, Feasegate, Goodramgate (between Deangate and Low Petergate), High Petergate, Lendal, Little Stonegate, Low Petergate, Market Street, Ousegate, Parliament Street and Swinegate.

In addition:

  • Stonegate is closed to traffic between 10.30am and 5am the following morning.
  • Deangate/ Minster Yard is closed to motor vehicles 24 hours a day, seven days a week. However, cycling is permitted along this route.
  • Fossgate is closed to motor vehicles between 6pm and 8am. At other times, motor vehicles are permitted only for access to businesses and residential premises. Cycling is permitted along this route.
  • Shambles is closed to all vehicles (including cyclists) 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Loading is permitted between 5pm and 10.30am.
