A total of 71 York-based workplaces took part in the Cycle September global bike challenge, clocking up a whopping 122,460 miles between them!

Cycle September is organised by Love To Ride and was promoted locally by City of York Council’s iTravel team (pictured), which offered a host of prizes and incentives to local people to persuade them to get involved and stay motivated for the duration of the challenge.

More than 1,000 individuals who live or work in York took part in Cycle September by signing up at www.lovetoride.net and logging in excess of 15,200 cycling journeys between them during the month. 80 of those who took part were completely new to cycling.

To add a competitive edge to the challenge, the workplaces were awarded points based on the distance their employees collectively managed to cover. The University of York topped the York leader board with an impressive 64,737 points, but also came third nationally in the category for businesses with 2,000 employees or more.

Councillor Andy D’Agorne, City of York Council’s Executive Member for Transport, said: “It was wonderful to see so many York-based workplaces embracing the Cycle September challenge – what a fantastic achievement to clock up such a vast distance in a month! Many congratulations to everyone who took part, especially the team at the University of York!

“It was great to see City of York Council staff leading by example and coming third out of the 71 York workplaces that took part. Their efforts are clear to see from the well-used cycle parking facilities at West Offices.”

“Cycle September may be over, but that doesn’t stop people from signing up to Love To Ride, where they can continue to log details of their journeys, encourage friends and family members to get involved, access prize draws and special offers, and take part in future challenges.”
