Next phase of York Outer Ring Road upgrade gets the green light
An upgrade to Monks Cross roundabout got the green light at the decision session for the executive member for transport and planning today (13 September).
It is the second of seven roundabouts to receive wider entrances and exits as part of a £38m scheme to reduce congestion on the outer ring road. The scheme will see seven roundabouts on the ring road upgraded, helping to improve journey times.
Cllr Peter Dew, the Executive Member for Transport and Planning, noted the four week public consultation running throughout May where residents and businesses were asked for their views and feedback on the proposed upgrade.
He also gave the green light for officers to start preparation works and arrangements to for construction to start with the appointment of the council’s civil engineering delivery team.
Cllr Dew said: “I’m delighted to approve the next step in the York Outer Ring Road upgrade scheme. This is the next stepping stone in our drive to improve seven key roundabouts along the outer ring road and help to reduce journey times for residents, businesses and visitors. I’d also like to thank people for their understanding and co-operation during the works at Wetherby Road roundabout which are on schedule to be completed in early 2019.”
Cllr Kim Groves, Chair of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority Transport Committee said: “Through our West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund we have spent over £90 million on schemes designed to speed up journeys by reducing congestion which in turn support inclusive growth and the creation of new jobs across the Leeds City Region.”
It is the second of seven roundabouts on the A1237 set for improvements over the next four years. The upgrades will mean more lanes and space on the approaches and exits, as well as improvements for pedestrians and cyclists.
The York Outer Ring Road improvements programme is being funded through the West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund, and the Leeds City Region Growth Deal - a £1 billion package of Government investment through the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP) to accelerate growth and create jobs across Leeds City Region.
