A1237 Wetherby Road roundabout upgrade
City of York Council is set to start work at the Wetherby Road/A1237 roundabout upgrade on 4th June.
This is the first of seven proposed roundabout upgrades between the Wetherby Road and Monks Cross junctions on the York Outer Ring Road (A1237). The total £38 million upgrade programme is funded through the West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund. The council is aware of the importance of the route to the local economy and are therefore working with the designers and contractors to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum level during the construction of the upgraded roundabouts. Increasing capacity at the roundabouts will have a significant impact on improving traffic flows and journey times on the outer ring road. This will be accomplished by providing three lane approaches and two lane exits at the junctions on the A1237.
The works will start on Monday 4th June 2018 and are expected to last until early Spring 2019.
The construction work will be carried out by the council’s in-house contractor with the working hours generally being between 7:30am – 4.00pm Monday to Friday, with the potential of extended working up until 8.00pm during these days if required to minimise the overall construction period. Some weekend working will also be necessary during the hours of 7.30am - 3.30pm. Lanes will will need to be slightly narrowed to make room for the roadworks, and a temporary speed limit reduction to 30mph on the approach and exits of the roundabout will be in place during the works. Generally two-way traffic flow will be maintained throughout the construction period although traffic management arrangements may need to be changed and overnight working may be required for more disruptive work – like resurfacing. If overnight working is deemed necessary, further details will be provided closer to the time.
Motorists should expect some delays, and are advised to plan their journey accordingly.
