Fiona and Martin Reilly, and their two boys Aidan and Cormac, were very happy to see i-Travel York when they visited them at their home in Poppleton earlier this month.
“I thought the project was a really good idea,” said Fiona. She challenged herself to try cycling and, since the visit by Sarah, has bought a brand new yellow Dutch bike, which she uses to get to the gym rather than drive. “There are cycle paths all the way” Fiona explained, “and it can be quicker than by car!”.
Cycling-fever has spread in the Reilly household as Cormac, following City of York Council-run bikeability training at school, has also begun cycling to school, with the encouragement of his parents.
The summer holidays are looking busy for the whole family as they plan a week’s worth of activities including visits to the many museums of York. They have challenged themselves to try out the bus to get to these activities using the free bus-taster tickets provided by the project.
Cormac and Aidan are also enjoying their new i-Travel pedometers which they say “are really fun to use”, and are going to use them to see how far they can walk during a family holiday to Sicily as part of the Kids Activity Challenge to do an hour of activity a day.
Fiona said her visit by i-Travel was “a really nice experience” and provided them with "really helpful” information and resources, particularly items such as the cycle route map. This has meant she has been able to consider swopping the car for the bike for other journeys and is even planning to cycle to work in town along the riverside bike path.
